Description

Edwards Atlas Moth Archioattacus edwardsii  (malayanus) - Malaysia

A species that is now most difficult to obtain. We have a stock of cocoons of Malaysian origin and will have eggs in July 2026.

Demand will be high - early ordering is recommended.

Edwards Atlas comes from the Himalayas and extends southwards into Malaysia where taxonomists now treat it as a separate species -malayanus.

One of the largest moths in the world, with a rich deep chocolate ground colour which instantly distinguishes Edwards Atlas from the more widespread Attacus atlas. The moths emerge in late June and July. Privet is an ideal foodplant. Because of the altitude of its habitat, edwardsii larvae seem to thrive at lower temperatures than atlas, and often do well at 15-20 degrees C, though some warmer daytime temperatures seem to be repaid by faster growth. It is useful to lightly mist spray the foodplant and larvae from time to time in dry periods and the larvae will sometimes be seen taking droplets. Misting is for larvae reared in cages or sleeves, where there is plenty of ventilation, not when reared in plastic boxes.
