Description

Colorado Pine Silkmoth Coloradia doris

This unusual medium-sized Saturniid is offered for the first time. The range is quite restricted to central and western North America.

The larvae feed on a range of local Pines and it is anticipated that they will accept Scotts Pine Pinus sylvestris  and possibly other Pines.

Young larvae are gregarious, feeding is small groups at the base of pine shoots. Larger larvae are solitary. Cocoons are made amongst leaf litter, or just below the ground surface. Here the pupa overwinters, emerging in spring and early summer. Emergence is in late morning and pairing takes place in the late afternoon or evening. Eggs normally hatch within 2-4 weeks.
