Worldwide Butterflies has been supplying butterflies and moths for half a century. There is a range of species available as livestock. Schools can see Recommended School Species.

Butterflies and moths are supplied for historic, scientific and identification collections, medical research, for photography and conservation, and even just for their incredible beauty and natural history interest.

Schools and educational establishments are prominent in Worldwide Butterflies’ list of customers. A number people started by buying from Worldwide Butterflies, and have gone on to become professional in Entomology and Natural History in a number of ways. In fact in fact this has now continued in subsequent generations. To read about Worldwide Butterflies from the earliest days please see History.

Welcome to the WWB Website

If you wish to edit your order, click on Shopping Cart where you can change the quantities or remove an item. It is essential to click the blue circular arrow ikon after making a change on an item, which updates the calculations.

Then proceed to Checkout.

If your order is not going through at checkout, you are then with PayPal, not on the WWB website, it sometimes helps to try an alternative valid card, otherwise, you can select to pay by PayPal instead of a card.

Login to My Account  to follow availability of booked items. You can see your order history, Store Credits and check on dispatch. Booked species may have an update note. If none please check the species text on the website to see the current availability.

Have you received the latest WWB NEWS? To receive WWB NEWS by email in future, please go to your Account and click NEWS Subscribe. It's free. You will be notified about current and coming species, special offers and more.

Some items on the website pages have multiple pictures which show when you click the main picure. If you hover the cursor over a picture, arrows appear left or right so you can scroll through the pictures enlarged.

LIVING BUTTERFLIES and MOTHS. For film shoots, weddings and other events we are sometimes asked for butterflies to release. Foreign species cannot be used for this and we don't supply living adults. You can buy pupae but not to a specific date, so you need to organise the synchronisation of emergence for the particular requirement.

TIME IN THE POST

Customers sometimes expect their orders to arrive next day. Please take into account the anticipated season shown for each item and the fact that several items may be sent from different sources, often from another country. Post is often slower in holiday periods, especially overseas.

MOST PACKETS ARE SENT BY MAIL AND ARRIVE WITH YOUR LETTERS.

THERE IS NO TRACKING.

BEFORE ENQUIRING ABOUT

BOOKED ORDERS

Please check availability on this website and, on YOUR ACCOUNT to see if there is a note against your booked item.

Availability: NOW means can be dispatched immediately or within a few days. If a month or season is stated, and we are in that period, it does not mean that the item is available immediately. We have to wait for the species to become available. The availability period shown is when that item normally becomes available. Eg  If it is June and a species is listed as June, it does not mean it is ready to send yet: it might be late June. When that species is actually ready to send, the availability will change to NOW and booked items are dispatched in date order.

LARVAE CANNOT BE POSTED OUTSIDE EUROPE

Please remember also that in summer eggs and larvae cannot be posted to warm countries, particularly southern Europe.

Search for XXP to see cost of sending by Express courier in only 1-2 days.

Historic specimens and Aberrations are now on the WWB website Click here to see set specimens of Coppers

The cost of postage and packing was not only reduced last season but is not increased with the new, higher postal rates.  New packaging is being used, that reduces weight and size, so the charge for posting livestock in the UK and overseas was reduced by about 25% and continues to be held down this year.

CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS

DEATHSHEAD HAWKMOTH atropos eggs are ready now. This is quite the most popular of all the species we offer. The larvae grow fast at this time of year and are easy on Privet. They become HUGE. Pupae are formed underground. The moths emerge this year. Adult moths squeak like a mouse when disturbed!

EARLY PEACOCK Inachis io larvae are available NOW.

PAINTED LADY cardui larvae are ready immediately, either on nettle leaf or in a pot of artificial diet (in stock for immediate dispatch)

EUROPEAN SWALLOWTAIL machaon gorganus pupae are being bred for constant supply over the next few weeks. Order now for supply in June.

A delightful spring butterfly THE GREEN-VEINED WHITE napi, flies with the Orange Tip in hedgerows and gardens. The larvae feed on wild Cruciferae such as Garlic Mustard, Charlock and Horseradish (they won't eat your cabbages!). They produce several generations through the spring and summer, hibernating eventually as pupae, which can be stored cold for the winter, to breed again in the spring. Pupae now available.

CHINESE OAK SILKMOTH pernyi eggs ready immediately. A wonderful species for the beginner. The easily-reared larvae become huge, after going through differently coloured stages. Breeds very easily. Moths are produced this year, possibly 3 generations. SPECIAL PRICES TOO!

MADAGASCAN EMPEROR suraka eggs are available immediately. The larvae have an amazing number of variations of colour and pattern. See the pictures!

AMERICAN MOON MOTH luna are breeding right now. Very attractive in all stages and easily reared. Two generations are produced each season.

A species with larvae that occur in many, totally different forms, is Antherina suraka from Madagascar. Click on this species and see the amazing variations in the larval forms.

The Giant Peacock Moth pyri are emerging now and eggs are immediately available.

COMPLETE SURPRISE! We have a small breeding stock of EDWARD'S ATLAS MOTH edwardsii. It has become impossible to get new wild stock today, but these cocoons are of good quality and size to produce fine eggs this July. Supplies will be limited, and may not be available again for years, if ever at all. This is probably the finest of all the Atlas species in the world. So don't miss this opportunity, and place your order as early as possible.

Another exceptional species recently listed is the CANARY LARGE WHITE Pieris cheiranthi. This is only found on the Canary Isles and is rare. One could spend weeks on the islands and never see a single example of cheiranthi, so don't miss this opportunity of having some pupae or larvae, obtainable just by ordering them!

SMALL TORTOISESHELL urticae larvae first brood have been supplied. More will be available in June. (See text to prepare nettle pots for feeding).

COMMA BUTTERFLY c-album The larvae live solitarily on Nettle, Elm, Willows and Sallows. Order now for dispatch in June.

More MADAGASCAN MOON MOTH mittrei EGGS have all sold now. More available from August. These eggs are HUGE, bigger than any other Lepidoptera eggs.  See the photo for egg size comparison! The larvae take readily to Eucalyptus and Liquidambar, and are easy to keep in a warm room. They change appearance as they grow, and are most active. Highly recommended.

A COMPLETELY NEW SATURNIID TO THE WWB LISTS! See Agapema homogena, a rarity from Arizona that breeds well in captivity on interestingly different kinds of foodplant! A chance to experience something REALLY NEW. Eggs due in early summer.

THERE ARE SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL PRICES on the Lepidoptera Rearing Outfit, Mini Silk Farm and all the PYJAMA CAGES. See the MARKET STALL for details. There can also be found some good reductions on pupae and cocoons. Don't delay: many of the reductions are for a short time or for a limited amount of stock.

The WWB website offers classic species such as the English and European Swallowtails, Atlas Moth, Deathshead atropos and Oleander Hawkmoths nerii, Purple Emperor iris, Spanish Moon Moth isabellae and many more. Availability of some of these has already started. They are popular, so the earlier you book, the higher on the list your order will be.

Catocala eggs, the Underwing Moths.  Store the eggs in the fridge until mid-April, then incubate and sleeve the larvae on growing foodplant. Supplies are getting low, so please don't delay ordering. There is a special offer on lots of 3 different species.

North American cocoons are available now! Please see Current Pupae.  Bulls Eye Moth Automeris io, Cherry Moth Callosamia promethea, American Moon Moth luna, American Oak Silkmoth polyphemus. Robin Moth cecropia are in short supply this winter, but we have just received more, quality and large cocoons. The price is high, but so is the quality.

DEATHSHEAD HAWKMOTH atropos PUPAE can be ordered NOW for early summer delivery. Very seldom available. Special price on lots of 5 pupae.

MADAGASCAN MOON MOTH mittrei COCOONS are available again. They emerge easily if kept in a warm kitchen and sprayed regularly.

African Moon Moth Argema mimosae cocoons will be available again in summer. We get them only once a year. Magnificent moths that pair relatively easily. Larvae feed on Eucalyptus. Highly recommended.

SLEEVES The two largest sizes are now available with a long ZIP opening, in addition to the open ends. Very much better for tending the larvae, and for checking. This enables close inspection in seconds, and makes it quick to collect up a few larvae to give to friends. The times one finds a caterpillar on one's clothing after carefully fastening both ends of the sleeve, only to have to undo it again!  The ZIP gives instant access! See also the new VELCRO Strip for sleeve closures. All helping to save time and adding to convenience!

PYJAMA CAGES are designed for the practical breeder who needs to be able to clean and renovate cages thoroughly and rapidly. They are proof against most parasites and the most escape-proof, for active larvae, of any design we have used. Eggs laid on the sides of the cage are dealt collected or sleeved with the minimum of time and effort. Pyjama cages are easily stored flat for the winter and quickly re-assembled in spring.

A new size of plastic rearing container has recently been introduced. The Size 8 comes in packs of 6. It is deeper than the flat Size 7, which allows more space for larvae and foodplant, without being so large that larvae stray off the food. This is very important when establishing young larvae. Buy a pack, and we think you will want to have some more!

The POP-UP CAGE is back!  See the CAGE Section.

SEE the MARKET STALL section for special offers and some big savings (Click on the menu top left of the screen). Watch this section for further offers. Other reductions include cages, the Lepidopterist's Rearing Outfit and the Mini Silk Farm, ALL AT SPECIAL PRICES!

BEGINNER? If you have not reared butterflies and moths before, please take note of the foodplants your larvae will need. To know how to keep caterpillars, hatch out pupae and care for your livestock we recommend the handbook The All Colour Paperback BUTTERFLIES which is on the Schools Page and in the Book Section. It is packed with information and will help you a great deal.

LIVESTOCK

If you are a beginner and need information on rearing from small caterpillars, or hatching out pupae, please order the book shown above. INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT SENT WITH EACH SPECIES, you need to acquire basic skills and this book is a simple way to learn them.

LIVESTOCK ON OUR WEBSITE  is very wide-ranging. Please scroll down the different sections. There are some very interesting species for the connoisseur and for the beginner.

AWAY DATES

ON YOUR ACCOUNT please enter dates when you cannot receive livestock. Letting us know by any other means will not apply the dates to the system and will not prevent dispatch of orders when you cannot receive them.

NEWS and UPDATES

We will email you: just go to My Account and click to receive these.

Newly hatched or small larvae are too small to be put into a cage or aquarium. If you can put them on growing foodplant, protected with a sleeve, that is ideal. Alternatively keep in a plastic box, lined with absorbent paper, in close confinement with fresh foodplant, and changed daily. Fuller hints on the page for Plastic Rearing Containers. For illustrated instructios see the All Colour Paperback BUTTERFLIES.
