Butterflies and moths are supplied for historic, scientific and identification collections, medical research, for photography and conservation, and even just for their incredible beauty and natural history interest.

Schools and educational establishments are prominent in Worldwide Butterflies’ list of customers. A number people started by buying from Worldwide Butterflies, and have gone on to become professional in Entomology and Natural History in a number of ways. In fact in fact this has now continued in subsequent generations. To read about Worldwide Butterflies from the earliest days please see History.

Welcome to the WWB Website

If you wish to edit your order, click on Shopping Cart where you can change the quantities or remove an item. It is essential to click the blue circular arrow ikon after making a change on an item, which updates the calculations.

Then proceed to Checkout.

If your order is not going through at checkout, you are then with PayPal, not on the WWB website, it sometimes helps to try an alternative valid card, otherwise, you can select to pay by PayPal instead of a card.

Login to My Account  to follow availability of booked items. You can see your order history, Store Credits and check on dispatch. Booked species may have an update note. If none please check the species text on the website to see the current availability.

Have you received the latest WWB NEWS? To receive WWB NEWS by email in future, please go to your Account and click NEWS Subscribe. It's free. You will be notified about current and coming species, special offers and more.

Some items on the website pages have multiple pictures which show when you click the main picure. If you hover the cursor over a picture, arrows appear left or right so you can scroll through the pictures enlarged.

LIVING BUTTERFLIES and MOTHS. For film shoots, weddings and other events we are sometimes asked for butterflies to release. Foreign species cannot be used for this and we don't supply living adults. You can buy pupae but not to a specific date, so you need to organise the synchronisation of emergence for the particular requirement.

Customers sometimes expect their orders to arrive next day. Please take into account the anticipated season shown for each item and the fact that several items may be sent from different sources, often from another country. Post is often slower in holiday periods, especially overseas.

Please check availability on this website and, on YOUR ACCOUNT to see if there is a note against your booked item. If you do enquire, please quote not only the order NUMBER and your NAME but also the SPECIES.

Availability: NOW means can be dispatched immediately or within a few days. If a month or season is stated, and we are in that period, it does not mean that the item is available immediately. We have to wait for the species to become available. The availability period shown is when that item normally becomes available. Eg  If it is June and a species is listed as June, it does not mean it is ready to send yet: it might be late June. When that species is actually ready to send, the availability will change to NOW and booked items are dispatched in date order.

Please remember also that in summer eggs and larvae cannot be posted internationally, without severe risk in transit, particularly to southern Europe, but even to countries such as  NL, D, B and F.

Search for XXP to see cost of sending by Express courier in only 1-2 days from dispatch. Click here.

Historic specimens and Aberrations are now on the WWB website Click here to see set specimens of Coppers

The cost of postage and packing was not only reduced last season but is not increased with the new, higher postal rates.  New packaging is being used, that reduces weight and size, so the charge for posting livestock in the UK and overseas was reduced by about 25% and continues to be held down this year.

PEACOCK BUTTERFLY Inachis io both larvae and pupae are available now. This species, together with the Small Tortoiseshell urticae suffered huge losses last winter when the hibernating adults woke early and died of starvation. Could you help to boost the Peacock population in your area?

CONVOLVULOUS HAWKMOTH Eggs are seldom available, and it is even rarer to have pupae for sale. There are some eggs ready right now, and pupae in October. Don't miss these!

Eggs are being laid now by THE CHINESE MOON MOTH Actias sinensis. Very seldom offered. Larvae feed on Liquidambar and Eucalyptus. Male and female moth entirely different. See the pictures, and note the amazing shining green silk cocoons! Don't miss these if you are a Saturniid connoisseur!

EGGS OF THE AMERICAN MOON MOTH Actias luna have resulted from prolific breeding. See exceptionally low prices for quantities of eggs right now. Click here.

PUPAE of the nominate subspecies Papilio machaon machaon are immediately available. This race is not P. m. gorganus which is found across Europe.  In fact there are greater similarities with the English Swallowtail Papilio machaon britannicus. Click on to this species in the featured section, to learn more and see pictures.

AUTUMN PUPAE are beginning to arrive from breeders. It is a good idea to look at the species you would like to breed next year and order breeding stock pupae early, while still available.

Small Tortoiseshells urticae have suffered very badly last winter because the mild weather woke them from hibernation when there was no food to keep them alive. In some areas populations are barely 5% of normal. We are expecting larvae in September. Could you help to spread this prime garden butterfly again?

There are some GOOD REDUCTIONS on certain livestock and other items. See the MARKET STALL for details.

SLEEVES for rearing larvae are on temporary SPECIAL OFFER at the moment.

Please click here to see the reductions.

DEATHSHEAD HAWKMOTH Acherontia atropos PUPAE - just a few immediately available. Hardly ever offered. Don't miss these!

WOOLLY BEARS The larvae of the GARDEN TIGER MOTH Arctia caja, are available again. Once a wayside species all over the countryside, and now seldom seen. There is a special offer for lots of 50.

INDIAN MOON MOTH Actias selene eggs are immediately available after a very long wait this season! One of the favourites of all Silkmoths. The larvae become HUGE and are easy to rear on easily obtained foodplants. There is also a DUO of Indain and American Moon Moths, at a special price.

EYED HAWK ocellata, eggs ready immediately. The larvae are masters of camouflage, and easy to rear. If you have growing foodplant, they like being sleeved on it. If not use plastic rearing containers (see notes on this page of the WWB website), and a cage when larger, and maintain good hygiene. Also available in Pick Your Own DUOs and TRIOs.

GINGER POLYPHEMUS. We have eggs from a lovely ginger form of the American Oak Silkmoth polyphemus. See the illustration, which is the actual pairing.

The WWB website offers classic species such as the English and European Swallowtails, Atlas Moth, Deathshead atropos and Oleander Hawkmoths nerii, Purple Emperor iris, Spanish Moon Moth isabellae and many more. Availability of some of these has already started. They are popular, so the earlier you book, the higher on the list your order will be.

See the range of current eggs and larvae, and note the special prices on DUOs and TRIOs which give amazing value if you want to rear several interesting species!

African Moon Moth Argema mimosae cocoons are available right now. We get them only once a year. Magnificent moths that pair relatively easily. Larvae feed on Eucalyptus. Highly recommended.

RIGHT INTO AUTUMN conditions for moth trapping are good.  Each night at present there is good moth activity. The MOONLANDER with Goodden GEMLIGHT works in the field, in places where there is no electricity. It is the most compact and lightweight trap in the world. The GemLight runs all night on 8 AA batteries. This compares with a typical battery the size and weight of a brick! Take a trap on holiday it occupies little space in a suitcase and is only the weight of a camera. There is always space in a car, caravan or boat, because it is so compact.

DEATHSHEAD HAWKMOTH atropos eggs are available now, and larvae very soon.  This is the most popular of all the species we offer. The larvae grow fast at this time of year and are easy on Privet. They become HUGE. Pupae are formed underground. The moths emerge this year. Adult moths squeak like a mouse when disturbed. We rarely have Deathshead Hawkmoth PUPAE .....  THERE ARE SOME IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE!

RIGHT UP THERE WITH THE DEATHSHEAD are the larvae of THE PRIVET HAWKMOTH Sphinx ligustri. These are some of the finest chunky and beautifully coloured caterpillars to be found anywhere in Europe! EGGS are available immediately. There are reductions for larger quantities! Click here.

OLEANDER HAWK nerii eggs and larvae are also available for a short time. The larvae grow very fast, feeding on Privet. See the pictures of the magnificent larvae.

ELEPHANT HAWK elpenor eggs are available again now. The characterful larvae are a delight to rear, and they feed on a variety of foodplants. The wonderful cerise pink moths are particularly beautiful.

PAINTED LADY cardui larvae are ready immediately, either on nettle leaf or in a pot of artificial diet (in stock for immediate dispatch.

ROBIN MOTH cecropia are emerging and breeding now. Eggs will be available again in September. The larvae are very attractive with their coloured knobbles and spikes. The moths are a sight to behold as they sit on your hand, fanning their wings.

AMERICAN MOON MOTH luna are breeding right now. Very attractive in all stages and easily reared. Two generations are produced each season.

More MADAGASCAN MOON MOTH mittrei EGGS have all sold now. More available in September/October. These eggs are HUGE, bigger than any other Lepidoptera eggs.  See the photo for egg size comparison! The larvae take readily to Eucalyptus and Liquidambar, and are easy to keep in a warm room. They change appearance as they grow, and are most active. Highly recommended.

Have you ever used a sleeve with a zip side opening? This is a new WWB innovation, as is the use of velcro ties for sleeve ends. Have a look at the sleeve section. Once you use a Zip Sleeve you won't want to go back to the traditional sleeve with no side access. A small extra cost for a huge benefit!

THERE ARE SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL PRICES on the Lepidoptera Rearing Outfit, Mini Silk Farm.  See the MARKET STALL for details. There can also be found some good reductions on pupae and cocoons. Don't delay: many of the reductions are for a short time or for a limited amount of stock.

MADAGASCAN MOON MOTH mittrei COCOONS can be ordered again for delivery this season.

PYJAMA CAGES are designed for the practical breeder who needs to be able to clean and renovate cages thoroughly and rapidly. They are proof against most parasites and the most escape-proof, for active larvae, of any design we have used. Eggs laid on the sides of the cage are dealt collected or sleeved with the minimum of time and effort. Pyjama cages are easily stored flat for the winter and quickly re-assembled in spring.

A new size of plastic rearing container has been introduced. The Size 8 comes in packs of 6. It is deeper than the flat Size 7, which allows more space for larvae and foodplant, without being so large that larvae stray off the food. This is very important when establishing young larvae. Buy a pack, and we think you will want to have some more!

The POP-UP CAGE is back!  See the CAGE Section.

SEE the MARKET STALL section for special offers and some big savings (Click on the menu top left of the screen). Watch this section for further offers. Other reductions include cages, the Lepidopterist's Rearing Outfit and the Mini Silk Farm, ALL AT SPECIAL PRICES!

BEGINNER? If you have not reared butterflies and moths before, please take note of the foodplants your larvae will need. To know how to keep caterpillars, hatch out pupae and care for your livestock we recommend the handbook The All Colour Paperback BUTTERFLIES which is on the Schools Page and in the Book Section. It is packed with information and will help you a great deal.

If you are a beginner and need information on rearing from small caterpillars, or hatching out pupae, please order the book shown above. INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT SENT WITH EACH SPECIES, you need to acquire basic skills and this book is a simple way to learn them.

LIVESTOCK ON OUR WEBSITE  is very wide-ranging. Please scroll down the different sections. There are some very interesting species for the connoisseur and for the beginner.

ON YOUR ACCOUNT please enter dates when you cannot receive livestock. Letting us know by any other means will not apply the dates to the system and will not prevent dispatch of orders when you cannot receive them.

We will email you: just go to My Account and click to receive these.

Newly hatched or small larvae are too small to be put into a cage or aquarium. If you can put them on growing foodplant, protected with a sleeve, that is ideal. Alternatively keep in a plastic box, lined with absorbent paper, in close confinement with fresh foodplant, and changed daily. Fuller hints on the page for Plastic Rearing Containers. For illustrated instructios see the All Colour Paperback BUTTERFLIES.
