Description

Perisomena caecigena Autumnal Emperor Moth

Only a few cocoons available.

A first for WWB. Very little known Saturniid from the Balkans and Eastern Europe, which inhabits open oak woodland and dry grassy areas, often on mountains.

The moths emerge in autumn, laying over-wintering eggs on twigs of the foodplant.

The larva, tufty and black at first, becomes pale green, covered with short white hairs, and yellow tubercles that carry long white hairy tufts. A very pretty caterpillar indeed!

Oak is the main foodplant, but larvae are reported also to eat Beech, Sallow, Hornbeam, Ash, Black Poplar, Pear and several Prunus species. Worth trying on Osier Willow too.

The cocoon is netted, with the pupa visible inside.

Saturniid connoisseurs will appreciate this relatively unknown species.
