Worldwide Butterflies has been supplying butterflies and moths for over half a century. There is a range of species available as livestock. Schools can see Recommended School Species.

Butterflies and moths are supplied for historic, scientific and identification collections, medical research, for photography and conservation, and even just for their incredible beauty and natural history interest.

Schools and educational establishments are prominent in Worldwide Butterflies’ list of customers. A number people started by buying from Worldwide Butterflies, and have gone on to become professional in Entomology and Natural History in a number of ways. In fact in fact this has now continued in subsequent generations. To read about Worldwide Butterflies from the earliest days please see History.

Welcome to the WWB Website

If you wish to edit your order, click on Shopping Cart where you can change the quantities or remove an item. It is essential to click the blue circular arrow ikon after making a change on an item, which updates the calculations.

Then proceed to Checkout.

If your order is not going through at checkout, you are then with PayPal, not on the WWB website, it sometimes helps to try an alternative valid card, otherwise, you can select to pay by PayPal instead of a card.

Login to My Account  to follow availability of booked items. You can see your order history, Store Credits and check on dispatch. Booked species may have an update note. If none please check the species text on the website to see the current availability.

Have you received the latest WWB NEWS? To receive WWB NEWS by email in future, please go to your Account and click NEWS Subscribe. It's free. You will be notified about current and coming species, special offers and more.

Some items on the website pages have multiple pictures which show when you click the main picure. If you hover the cursor over a picture, arrows appear left or right so you can scroll through the pictures enlarged.

LIVING BUTTERFLIES and MOTHS. For film shoots, weddings and other events we are sometimes asked for butterflies to release. Foreign species cannot be used for this and we don't supply living adults. You can buy pupae but not to a specific date, so you need to organise the synchronisation of emergence for the particular requirement.

TIME IN THE POST

Customers sometimes expect their orders to arrive next day. Please take into account the anticipated season shown for each item and the fact that several items may be sent from different sources, often from another country. Post is often slower in holiday periods, especially overseas.

MOST PACKETS ARE SENT BY MAIL AND ARRIVE WITH YOUR LETTERS.

THERE IS NO TRACKING.

BEFORE ENQUIRING ABOUT BOOKED ORDERS . . . .

Please check availability on this website and, on YOUR ACCOUNT to see if there is a note against your booked item. If you do enquire, please quote not only the order NUMBER and your NAME but also the SPECIES.

Availability: NOW means can be dispatched immediately or within a few days. If a month or season is stated, and we are in that period, it does not mean that the item is available immediately. We have to wait for the species to become available. The availability period shown is when that item normally becomes available. Eg  If it is June and a species is listed as June, it does not mean it is ready to send yet: it might be late June. When that species is actually ready to send, the availability will change to NOW and booked items are dispatched in date order.

COURIER DELIVERIES to EUROPE International orders for livestock that would take too long in the post, are delivered in Europe by express courier, usually arriving next day after dispatch. This almost eliminates the risk in transit and is the only shipping option for most non-dormant livestock. Some species are recommended to be shipped by courier: in such cases, if XXP is not selected the packet will be posted, but the risk is considerably increased.

Outside Europe only dormant pupae and eggs can be posted. Courier delivery outside Europe is only by individual arrangement and is not generally available.

Historic specimens and Aberrations are now on the WWB website Click here to see set specimens of Coppers

The cost of postage and packing was not only reduced last season but is not increased with the new, higher postal rates.  New packaging is being used, that reduces weight and size, so the charge for posting livestock in the UK and overseas was reduced by about 25% and continues to be held down this year.

CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS

The WWB website offers classic species such as Swallowtails, Atlas Moth, Deathshead atropos and Oleander Hawkmoths nerii, Purple Emperor iris, Spanish Moon Moth isabellae and many more. Availability of some of these has already started. They are popular, so the earlier you book, the higher on the list your order will be.

TROPICAL GIANTS!  Successful breeding of Actias isis from Sulawesi, will enable us to supply many eggs in July. It's a great achievement to have this species breeding so well. There are also both eggs and pupae of the largest of all the Moon Moths Argema mittrei from Madagascar, which has the largest egg of all species in the world, and the largest cocoon!

The much-sought Indian Moon Moth Actias selene is also available right now as larvae. Now only a few left. This is an all-time favourite, that has become difficult to obtain. American Moon Moths luna are breeding now and there are plenty of eggs. Robin Moth cecropia are also laying well. There is an unusual Bullseye Moth, Automeris excreta which does well on Privet.

A first for WWB is the Rose Myrtle Lappet Moth Trabala vishnou from Thailand. Wonderful moths and charming wiskery caterpillars - but watch those hairs, some people are sensitive to them. Special introductory price!

Eggs and larvae of South American OWL BUTTERFLIES Caligo are available immediately. Also larvae and pupae of Morpho peleides! It's a long time since we could offer Morpho larvae! See also larvae and pupae of the Yellow Admiral itea that has also not been available for some years.

CLOUDED YELLOW crocea larvae are ready to send right now. Pot up some clover and keep the larvae protected by a sleeve over the entire pot. PUPAE can can also be ordered now, as larger larvae are pupating at the moment.

GREEN-VEINED WHITE napi PUPAE are immediately available for a short time. This is a charming wayside butterfly that breeds on wild Mustards and other Cruciferae. Not to be confused with the cabbage-feeding species. The spring flight of butterflies breeds to produce a further generation in summer.

RED ADMIRAL atalanta eggs and larvae are available in quantity. Normally very difficult to obtain. Ideally keep the larvae on growing nettle. They live solitarily, each one in a leaf tent for protection. This is a rare opportunity.

SMALL TORTOISESHELL urticae larvae are doing very well for us right now. There are lots available, which is just as well because this species has suffered a lot in the wild over the last few years, and this spring very few have been seen. Can you help to increase them in your area? Maybe you could rear some on and release the butterflies to breed locally.

PEACOCK BUTTERFLY Inachis io larvae are available in large numbers, due to a successfull second brood.  Now the heatwave is over across Europe, it will make it much safer for sending larvae again.

HAWKMOTH eggs: Rarely can we offer Convolvulous Hawk eggs or larvae: they are some immediately available. Elephant elpenor and Small Elephant porcellus are available immediately. Also Oleander nerii, and in about a month, Deathshead Hawkmoth eggs. Some Privet Hawk ligustri eggs are available now, and there will be lots more to come.

SOME OLD FAVOURITES: Woolly Bears, the caterpillars of the Garden Tiger Moth caja will again be available. This species was once common on roadsides, and is no longer. We are offering stocks of 50 to help spread them across the country. Would you try this?

DUOs and TRIOs are bargain offers of eggs of more than one species, for nearer the price of one. You can now PICK YOUR OWN two or three species from the offered list. A very popular offer that gives you variety without too much outlay!

MADAGASCAN SILKMOTHS. The Madagascan Moon Moth mittrei is not just one of the largest of all moths, but it has many unique characteristics, and is only found on the island of Madagascar. It is amazing that it is available for us to observe in captivity and to breed in temperate countries. The egg and cocoon are both the largest in the world, by quite a margin! Mittrei cocoons are in stock for immediate delivery. Cocoons of the Madagascan Emperor Antherina suraka  are also available: most have sold, but there are a few left. The moths breed very easily and the resulting larvae are the most varied in colour and pattern that we have ever seen. See suraka larvae pictures on this website! Eggs can be ordered now for delivery May/June.

LARGE COPPER Lycaena dispar batavus larvae are available again. There are very few captive colonies today and we are lucky to have some this year to supply to breeders. We don't know how many more years they will be available. Click here to order and see recommendations for feeding and keeping the larvae.

There are SALE PRICES  on selected livestock right now. There are still pupae of very desirable species offered for immediate sale, released from our Breeding Stock Reserve. See Atlas Moth, American Moon luna, Cherry Moth promethea, Emperor Gum Moth eucalypti, and the Willowherb Hawkmoth proserpina. This is also a chance to stock up on NETTING, SLEEVES, and Plastic Rearing containers, CLICK ON THE MARKET STALL TO SEE ALL SPECIAL OFFERS.  Some reductions are temporary. There will be changes and additions so please check regularly. Don't miss the opportunities!

Agapema homogena is another lesser-known Saturniid which did very well for WWB last summer. We have a breeding stock again and eggs can be ordered now for supply in summer. The moths emerge in the afternoon, pair in late evening. At night eggs are laid in groups on the cage netting. The larvae are gregarious at first. The winter cocoons are spun amongst vegetation on the ground.

HICKORY HORNED DEVIL Citheronia regalis eggs will again be available in the coming season, after absence for some years. They are very popular indeed, so please book early. This is a very grand silk moth, with larvae that are so fearsome that, once reared, they will never be forgotten. The moths are magnificent, and quite unlike most other Saturniid species.

Next supplies of EXOTIC BUTTERFLY PUPAE will be in July.

Emperor Moth pavonia cocoons have now all sold.  Its European larger cousins the Giant Peacock Moth pyri and pavoniella are recommended. All three species emerge and breed in spring and produce wonderful larvae.

There are some GOOD REDUCTIONS on certain livestock and other items. See the MARKET STALL for details.

SLEEVES for rearing larvae are on temporary SPECIAL OFFER at the moment.

Please click here to see the reductions.

THE SEASON FOR MOTH TRAPPING started in May. Despite the advanced spring, and frequent sightings of butterflies, moths have been slower to react to spring. The MOONLANDER with Goodden GEMLIGHT works in the field, in places where there is no electricity. It is the most compact and lightweight trap in the world. The GemLight runs all night on 8 AA batteries. This compares with a typical battery the size and weight of a brick!  Take a trap on holiday! It occupies little space in a suitcase and is only the weight of a camera. There is always space in a car, caravan or boat, because it is so compact.  The batteries can be charged from a vehicle or on mains.

Have you ever used a sleeve with a zip side opening? This is a new WWB innovation, as is the use of velcro ties for sleeve ends. Have a look at the sleeve section. Once you use a Zip Sleeve you won't want to go back to the traditional sleeve with no side access. A small extra cost for a huge benefit!

PYJAMA CAGES are designed for the practical breeder who needs to be able to clean and renovate cages thoroughly and rapidly. They are proof against most parasites and the most escape-proof, for active larvae, of any design we have used. Eggs laid on the sides of the cage are dealt collected or sleeved with the minimum of time and effort. Pyjama cages are easily stored flat for the winter and quickly re-assembled in spring.

A new size of plastic rearing container has been introduced. The Size 8 comes in packs of 6. It is deeper than the flat Size 7, which allows more space for larvae and foodplant, without being so large that larvae stray off the food. This is very important when establishing young larvae. Buy a pack, and we think you will want to have some more!

SEE the MARKET STALL section for special offers and some big savings (Click on the menu top left of the screen). Watch this section for further offers. Other reductions include cages, the Lepidopterist's Rearing Outfit and the Mini Silk Farm, ALL AT SPECIAL PRICES!

BEGINNER? If you have not reared butterflies and moths before, please take note of the foodplants your larvae will need. To know how to keep caterpillars, hatch out pupae and care for your livestock we recommend the handbook The All Colour Paperback BUTTERFLIES which is on the Schools Page and in the Book Section. It is packed with information and will help you a great deal.

LIVESTOCK

If you are a beginner and need information on rearing from small caterpillars, or hatching out pupae, please order the book shown above. INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT SENT WITH EACH SPECIES, you need to acquire basic skills and this book is a simple way to learn them.

LIVESTOCK ON OUR WEBSITE  is very wide-ranging. Please scroll down the different sections. There are some very interesting species for the connoisseur and for the beginner.

AWAY DATES

ON YOUR ACCOUNT please enter dates when you cannot receive livestock. Letting us know by any other means will not apply the dates to the system and will not prevent dispatch of orders when you cannot receive them.

NEWS and UPDATES

We will email you: just go to My Account and click to receive these.

Newly hatched or small larvae are too small to be put into a cage or aquarium. If you can put them on growing foodplant, protected with a sleeve, that is ideal. Alternatively keep in a plastic box, lined with absorbent paper, in close confinement with fresh foodplant, and changed daily. Fuller hints on the page for Plastic Rearing Containers. For illustrated instructios see the All Colour Paperback BUTTERFLIES.
