Great Prominent  Peridea anceps

Only a few pupae left now.

This is the largest of the Prominent moth family Notodontidae, which includes Puss and the Kittens, Lobster Moth and the Buff Tip.

The Great Prominent is beautifully patterned for camouflage, so is easily overlooked when at rest on a piece of natural wood. It flies in one generation usually in May or June, but the flight season depends on lattidude and climate.

The caterpillar feeds on Oak and is reared easily, particularly when sleeved on growing foodplant. It does not have the curious humps that are seen on other Prominent larvae but it is a splendid robust creature, coloured in greens, with prominent lateral line and an extra large head.
