Description

The Eastern Deathshead Acherontia styx

Livestock of this species is MOST difficult to obtain. This is a RARE opportunity! There are fewer than 30 pupae available.

Acherontia styx occurs in Asia, from Arabia to Japan and in tropical Asia. These pupae are with one of our Russian breeders, and will be sent in spring when conditions for transport are not so chilling.

This species is usually a little smaller than the more familiar Deathshead Acherontia atropos. The skull marking on the thorax is considerably more dusky, and the central spot on the forewing is generally yellow, whereas in atropos it is paler or white.

The larval foodplants are principally Solanum and include Tomato, and probably Capsicum. Also reportedly Lantana. Whether they would take to Privet Ligustrum is apparently not recorded, but it would certainly be worth trying.

In temperate climate the species is continuously brooded and, as with atropos, the pupae will slow down and even diapause in cold conditions.
