Description

Yellow-legged or Scarce Large Tortoiseshell Nymphalis xanthomelas form Anna

There are some remaining pupae and we can take a few more orders for this rarity.

This particularly vivid form first described and named as recently as 1967, is said to have a more intense background colour than the typical butterflies. It comes from only a few damp forest areas of Poland and has only once before been offered by WWB.

This is a chance to try something rather special.

The Yellow-legged, or Scarce Large Tortoiseshell, has been found breeding in the eastern counties of England, the progeny of immigrants from eastern Europe. This would undoubtedly make this a candidate for the British List. With climate change, there is a possibility of this species becoming a British resident.

The larvae feed on Sallows, Willows and Poplars.
