Description

Green Dragon Moth Ophiusa tirhaca Greece

This fine and quite large moth has characteristcs in common with the Red and Blue Underwings Catocala species, but it is from warmer climates, so it behaves like Mediterranean species, slowing down its life cycle in winter, without a dormant stage. The range is from southern Europe to Africa, Asia and Australia.

This is a first for WWB and one to celebrate as it is hardly ever available. The pupae can be kept cool (7-10º) for 2-4 weeks, or they can be incubated as soon as you wish. The larvae, which are very similar to Catocala, feed on a wide variety of plants. Pistachia is a particular favourite in Southern Europe and Asia. In temperate climates they take Heaths and Heathers, Daphne, some Pines, Pelargonium, Eucalyptus, Cistus, Viburnum, Geranium, Gorse, Rhus cotinus, Citrus and Gorse. It is likely that other foodplants will be discovered.

Pupae are formed in leaf litter on the ground, or even in light soil. We have never had this species to breed but it is said to do well in captivity. The moths love to gorge on fruit.
