Sea Buckthorn Hawk Hyles hippophaes
In the same genus as the Spurge euphorbiae and Bedstraw Hawk gallii. Hippophaes is quite a rarity.
This species occurs in a band across southern Europe from northern Spain to Yugoslavia and eastwards to Russia and Turkey. The larvae feed on Sea Buckthorn Hippophae rhamnoides, a very attractive plant which is not difficult to obtain at tree nurseries. Reported foodplants also include Willowherb and Eleagnus.
Rather difficult to obtain. This is an opportunity to see one of Europe's lesser known species.
