Description

Russian Moon Moth Actias sjoeqvisti

From Far Eastern Russia, this has been introduced to captive breeding only in recent years. The larvae in their early instars are indistinguishable from those of Actias artemis, and it is possible that this is a geographical race of artemis, or has evolved from that species to become one in its own right. More mature larvae have much in common with Actias selene.

Newly hatched larvae are sometimes reluctant to feed. Tempt them in a small enclosure with a variety of foods until they show preferences.

Foodplants are still being discovered and you might add to the list, but we have successfully used Hawthorn, Walnut,  Alder and Osier Willow. Very likely Plum and other fruit trees as well. Liquidambar and Birch have been used by other breeders.

Pairing is easy, though often not observed as it is brief and at night.

Cocoons produced in autumn can be kept cool to breed from in the spring. Recommended as a species we can all learn more about.
