Description

Elephant Hawk Dielephila elpenor

The pink moth is streamlined like a pink jet bomber aircraft! With immaculate white legs, and contrasting olive markings on the vivid pink, this is one of our most striking Hawkmoths. But the caterpillars are even more amazing! Watch them grow and change from green to black, with very prominent eye-spots, and an extendable trunk when they are on the move. A rarer green form of the caterpillar may occur in any rearing. Fast growing.

A most attractive and easy species to rear. The larvae like Willowherb Epilobium, best but also feed on Fuschia, Virginia Creeper Parthenocissus, Evening Primrose Oenothera, Honeysuckle Lonicera, Purple Loosestrife Lythrum, Busy Lizzie Impatiens, Vine Vitis and Bedstraw Galium. Reportedly also on Wild Carrot Daucus, Docks and Knot Weed, Rumex and Polygonum.  The larvae pupate amongst leaf litter on the ground, and emerge next spring as one of the most beautiful of all hawkmoths.
