Description

Byasa (Atrophoneura alcinous) Far Eastern Russia

A very beautiful Papilio that flies with grace and charm amongst summer flowers and greenery. The larval foodplant is  Pipevine Aristolochia which imparts strong poisonous properties that protect all stages of the life cycle, and enable the butterfly to flaunt itself and sit prominently, wings openly displaying its warning colours of black and scarlet, secure from predators who never attempt to attack, and if they do, they never try it again!

The chrysalis is not camouflaged but has an extraordinary shape and colouring, that can best be described a like a piece of chewed toffee!  These pupae are dormant in winter and are stored cool until spring when the butterflies normally emerge in May.

It is years since we have had this species. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!
